Police at Lingadzi in Lilongwe have arrested a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of allegedly stealing handbags from Congregants during a service at Good News Ministries Church in Area 47 in the city.
Spokesperson for Lingadzi Police, Cassim Manda has confirmed the arrest and identified the woman as Bridget Jabes.
According to Manda, police have been receiving a lot of complaints from church members, then police launched an investigation and caught the suspect after gathering intelligence.
It has been revealed that Jabes had the notoriety of targeting victims who had closed their eyes in prayer, snatching their handbags and making a quick escape.
“A search at her house found several handbags and wallets, which have been identified by their rightful owners,” he added.
Meanwhile, the suspect has been charged with theft and she will soon appear in court.
Bridget Jabes hails from Kambilonjo village, Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu district.
