The Midima first grade Magistrate has convicted and fine a 28 year old ex-convict Rodrick Kaliwo for the offence of Theft by trick.
According to Limbe police spokesperson Seargent Aubrey Singanyama the suspect was duping people around Banana area in Bangwe township by posing as a witchdoctor with the powers of multiplying money and make them rich.
The ex-convict, on 7th July, 2024, duped a Banana based business person money amounting to Sixty thousand Kwacha by implying that he will
multiply it through magic to the sum of nine hundred thousand Kwacha in 2 hours time.
Singanyama narrates that Kaliwo, failed to multiply the said amount and therefore orderd the victim to fetch soil from a fresh grave in the area.
This demand made the victim to realise that he was being duped and he reported the matter to Bangwe Police where officers managed to follow the issue and arrested the suspect.
During the arrest the suspect was found with a bunch of papers cut in pieces and some black powder which he claimed to be charms believed to have been used as a means to trick unsuspecting victims.
The suspect confessed that he is not a witch doctor, but rather an ex- convict who resorted to dupe people to earn a living.
Passing his sentence today presiding magistrate Lameck Mkwapatira to pay MK120,000 fine or in default serve a 2 year jail term.
Rodrick Kaliwo hails from Mukoza village, in the area of Chief Makanjira in Mangochi district and he will appear before court soon according to the Police.
