At least 19 people at Ng’onga area under Traditional Authority Chisovya in Rumphi were last evening rushed to a health centre for treatment after taking sweet beer suspected to have been poisoned.
Rumphi Police Station Spokesperson Sub-Inspector Noel Kamchenga has confirmed the incident and said the sweet beer locally known as Thobwa, was prepared by one of the family members for them to drink while interacting.
It is reported that after consuming it, people started complaining of stomach pains and they were referred to the said health facility for treatment.
Due to their condition, some have been referred to the district hospital for further medical treatment.
Meanwhile, police in the district have instituted an investigation into the matter.
