Former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dalitso Kabambe has officially resigned from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), a decision he confirmed yesterday despite initial denials from the party’s spokesperson.

In a press statement issued yesterday, Kabambe announced, “After much reflection and consideration, I have decided to resign as a member of the Democratic Progressive Party effective 14th July, 2024.” He also revealed that he had informed the DPP President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, of his decision prior to making it public.

Kabambe’s resignation comes amid conflicting statements from the DPP. Earlier, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba had dismissed reports of Kabambe’s resignation as “fake news.” However, Kabambe’s confirmation today has clarified the situation, and he expressed his best wishes for Mutharika and the DPP family in his departure statement.

In response to Kabambe’s resignation, Namalomba stated, “Everyone has freedom of association. We respect his decision to move on.” The DPP spokesperson’s comments reflect a neutral stance on Kabambe’s departure, emphasizing the party’s respect for individual choices.

Kabambe, who was once a presidential hopeful for the DPP, had been a prominent figure within the party. His resignation marks a significant moment for both him and the DPP as he prepares for his next steps.

As Kabambe moves forward, he has promised to share his future plans in due course, leaving the DPP with a message of goodwill and best wishes.
