Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his role as England manager just two days after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Southgate, who has been at the helm for eight years, made the announcement on Tuesday, bringing an end to his tenure which included leading England through four major tournaments.

Southgate, 53, managed the England squad in a total of 102 matches, guiding the team to the final of Euro 2020 where they were beaten on penalties by Italy.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” said Southgate.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.”

Despite a successful spell that included reaching the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, Southgate’s second consecutive European Championship final defeat led him to resign from his position.
