In today’s Blantyre City Council election, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councillor for Bangwe-Nthandizi Isaac Jomo Osman emerged as the new Deputy Mayor with 11 votes from the 30 cast.

Fane Balaba Kanonjelera from United Transformation Movement (UTM), who was the Deputy Mayor before, came in second place with 10 votes, and Gerald Lipikwe from DPP also trailed with 9 votes. Osman’s win signifies a shift in the city’s governance team.

Meanwhile, Councillor Joseph Makwinja of Bangwe Ward from the DPP has been elected as the new Mayor of Blantyre City with 16 votes. The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), in charge of the elections, is yet to confirm the appointments.
