The body of retired Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Major General, Buxton Titus Namwali, will be laid to rest on Sunday in Thyolo.

His son, Jeremy, said the ceremony will take place at Phodogoma village, Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa. He died aged 84.

Major General Namwali was one of the first four Malawian soldiers to be commissioned as officers in the army. He led the rescue operation of a hijacked South African plane at Chileka in 1972.

Former president Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda promoted Namwali from Brigadier to Major General after that mission. He retired in 1979.

Major General Namwali also served as chair of the Commonwealth Ex-Service League of Malawi, board chair for MBC and the security head at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, ESCOM, and Auction Holdings, among other places.
