The Malawi Police Service has launched a criminal investigation into the flawed K750 million Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) fertilizer procurement contract with Barkaat Foods Limited from the UK.

National police spokesperson Peter Kalaya revealed that the investigation is proceeding as instructed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

This move follows the high-profile dismissal of Agriculture Minister Lobin Lowe and his deputy, Madalitso Kambauwa-Wirima, who were removed from their positions in October 2022 due to the scandal.

Michael Kaiyatsa, Vice Chair of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, expressed cautious optimism that the investigation will bring about justice after a prolonged period of inaction.

This step underscores the ongoing efforts to tackle corruption and ensure transparency within Malawi’s public procurement processes.
