A 97-year-old woman from Muvwela Village in Chikankanta District, Southern Province, has sustained injuries after being raped by unknown assailants last Friday.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police Auxensio Daka reports that the victim, who was sleeping alone, was awakened early Friday morning by the sound of her one-roomed grass-thatched house door being forced open.

Daka said an unknown individual entered the house, approached her bed, and demanded sexual intercourse.

He said when the woman tried to call for help, the assailant pulled out a knife and cut her left thumb before undressing and raping her.

Daka said the suspect then stole two small bags of maize and one small bag of mealie meal, valued at approximately 1,030 Kwacha.

He said Police have issued the victim a medical report form and opened a docket, but no arrests have been made yet.
