Former President Peter Mutharika has expressed shock over the death of Zambia’s former first lady Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa.
Maureen Mwanawasa, a spouse to former Zambia President Levy Mwanawasa died yesterday at Maina Soko Medical Centre.
Writing on his official facebook page Mutharika said the former first lady was champion of women’s rights.
“Gertrude and I are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Her Excellency Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa, former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia. As a respected lawyer and champion of women’s rights, she left an indelible mark on Zambia’s history. Her legacy as a devoted public servant and mentor will be cherished by many.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family, particularly her children, and to President Hakainde Hichilema,” said Mutharika in the statement.
Meanwhile, the funeral program is yet to be announced.
