The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn an appeal that was filed with the High Court regarding the ruling made by the Principal Magistrate’s court in Lilongwe on the case involving Norman Chisale. Chisale was accused of insulting and threatening the Minister of Justice and other senior government officials.
DPP had appealed the case on five grounds, some of which they claimed were inconsistent with the lower court’s ruling, arguing that the lower court had wrongly acquitted Chisale on charges of insult and threat.
Its is reported that senior officials at the DPP office acted without proper consultation with their colleagues. The Minister of Justice, Titus Mvalo, after reviewing the letter, met with DPP official Masauko Chamkakala and discussed the withdrawal of the appeal, stating that the matter should not be prolonged with a single issue.
Norman Chisale’s lawyer, Gilbert Khonyongwa, expressed satisfaction with the conclusion of the case, saying, “I hope that the government will reflect on this matter and recognize that there are other more pressing issues to address.”
