At least three people have been confirmed dead while three others are still missing after a canoe they were sailing in capsized at Chigondo dock in Nsanje.

Police in the district say the incident occurred on Wednesday around 15:30 after it was attacked by a hippopotamus.
Nsanje police publicist Sergeant Agnes Zalakoma says the canoe had 11 passengers on board.

Zalakoma has since identified the deceased as Isaac Faela 38, Yanjanani Stanford 30 and Dofiya John 45.

“The passengers were coming from Ndiole area within Ndindi marsh where they went for farming activities. Postmortem results show that death was due to suffocation,” Zalakoma said.

All the deceased came from the area of Traditional Authority TA Ngabu in Nsanje District.
