Police at Mitundu in Lilongwe have arrested a 32-year-old man allegedly for assaulting to death his brother Chokonoka Chigwetsa, 34, over disagreements on debit the suspect owed the deceased.
Spokesperson for Lilongwe Police, Hastings Chigalu has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspects as Masautso Chigwetsa.
According to Chigalu, It is said that Chokonoka (deceased), while drunk, went to the suspect’s (Masautso) house to collect money which the latter owed him.
However, quarrels erupted between the two Chigwetsa’s, and in the heat of the misunderstandings the suspect took a wooden stick and assaulted Chokonoka who fell down unconsciously.
Later relatives rushed Chokonoka to Mlale Mission Hospital where doctors upon observing his condition, made a decision to refer him to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) for further medical attention.
However, Chokonoka was pronounced dead before being taken to KCH.
Postmortem done by medical personnel from Mitundu Rural Hospital, revealed that Chokonoka died due to internal bleeding, secondary to assault.
Masautso will soon appear in court to answer murder case.
Both the suspect Masautso, and the deceased Chokonoka hail from Mbofana Village, Traditional Authority Masula in Lilongwe District.
