Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has consoled President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and all Malawians over the recent death of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima.

Steinmeier offered the condolence after meeting President Chakwera in Berlin where the two leaders held bilateral talks.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has confirmed of the development in a statement posted on his official facebook page.

“Wrapping up my working visit here in Berlin, I have held bilateral talks with His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany at his official residence.

“He offered condolences to the people of Malawi for the tragic loss of former Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others in June,” wrote Chakwera.

He added: “President Steinmeier expressed gratitude for the enduring 60-year old ties between our two nations and the need to sustain the same to the benefit of future generations.

“I have restated my administration’s position that Germany is one key partner that has a positive bearing on Malawi’s development agenda.”

President Chakwera is expected to return home this weekend.
