Local Contractors, over 50 in total, working under Roads Authority have threatened to hold a fresh vigil at Roads Funds Administration (RFA) offices in the capital Lilongwe from September 2, 2024 over delayed payments amounting to MK45 billion.
The local contractors are accusing the RFA) of playing double standard on the matter as it only settled few payments earlier this year.
This has been confirmed in letter notifying the District Commissioner for Lilongwe City and the Malawi Police Service of the impending vigil seen by this publication.
“As you are aware, we the aggrieved contractors presented a petition to Roads Fund Administration on 21st May 2024 over delayed payments amounting to over MK45 billion accumulated from January 2024.
“After this move, few payments were made but later, we have noted that RFA is no longer honoring payments, leading to heavy accumulation of unpaid amounts of money owed to contractors. This is severely affecting our respective businesses as we are unable to pay workers and other bills,” reads part of the letter.
The Contractors said that all avenues to amicably resolve the matter with RFA have proved futile hence resorting to the vigil.
The disgruntled contractors have said they will only call off the vigil once their grievances are resolved.
