Police at Muchinga Province in Zambia have condemned a mob attack on a 70-year-old woman, in Katozi village, Nakonde district, on Thursday.

The attack, sparked by suspicions of witchcraft, left her property destroyed, with damages valued at K65,000.

New Commissioner of Police Dennis Moola has warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, stating that police will not tolerate such behavior.

Charges of arson, criminal trespass, and malicious damage to property have been pressed, and investigations are underway to bring the culprits to justice.

The mob had accused Iray Nyondo of practicing witchcraft, leading to the destruction of her property, including two wooden kitchen units, five doors, and assorted household goods.

Police intervened, rescuing Ms. Nyondo and dispersing the crowd.
