The Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda has said he is disappointed with a letter by the Malawi Law Society (MLS) questioning his appointment by the Head of State as Senior Counsel.
Chakaka’s response comes barely hours after government announced the postponement of the fuction today which was scheduled to be presided over by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace.
Justice Ministry spokesperson Frank Namangale said the postponement give room for Malawi Law Society (MLS) and its committee to reconsider its recommendation”.
In response to MLS query Chakaka Nyirenda said; “The MLS on 24th August, 2024 wrote Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice Allison M’bang’ombe questioning the basis of the Attorney General’s appointment, saying he had not yet served for 15 years at the time he was applying for the position.
“It is baffling to note that MLS is stabbing itself on its own back as the body is mandated by law to make recommendations through Honours Committee and the President Mr. Patrick Mpaka was part of the committee that approved the name of Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda.”
According to Section 52(2)(b), one must serve for 15 or more before being accorded the status of a Senior Counsel.
