President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, who is also Chancellor of the University of Malawi has described President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi as a true compatriot who has spearheaded deeper relations between Malawi and Mozambique for the past four years.
Dr Chakwera said this today at the University of Malawi where the University awarded President Nyusi, an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in International Affairs and Diplomacy (Honoris Causa).
The University of Malawi Chancellor said with the strong bilateral relations currently enjoyed by Malawi and Mozambique, the two countries are now standing together in times of need and plenty.
The President added that following the strong diplomatic ties, Malawi and Mozambique have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in areas such as trade, security, cultural exchange, infrastructure development and climate resilience.
The Malawi leader said President Nyusi’s service has inspired many in the SADC region and beyond which has fostered peace among others.
Delivering his speech, President Nyusi said the conferment by the oldest university in Malawi is a great honour to him, his family, workmates and his country and expressed his gratitude to President Chakwera, the chancellor and the entire University of Malawi for the honour.
Nyusi said he recognises that the strong diplomatic ties by Malawi and Mozambique has spearheaded infrastructure developments beneficial to the two sister nations.
The Mozambican leader said the award of the honorary doctorate is a testament that the University of Malawi follows remarkable developments on the region, continent and beyond.
He has since announced that he will come back at the university of Malawi at an opportune time to deliver a lecture on economic diplomacy.
