The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has said it is not moved by government’s pressure to appoint Zomba Chingala lawmaker Lonnie Chijere Chirwa’s replacement.

Last week, the opposition DPP appointed Chijere Chirwa to be confirmed as Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission replacing Dr. George Chaponda who is now serving as leader of opposition in Parliament.

But the government rejected her through voting.

Yesterday, Member of Parliament for Ntchisi South Ulemu Chilapondwa asked the opposition DPP to immediately replace Chijere with MP for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa.

Chilapondwa said the committee is failing to discharge its duties because the shortfall.

Reacting to the plea Chaponda said the party will not pushed to appoint another MP on the matter.

“We noted that certain government members of parliament are pressuring the Democratic Progressive Party – DPP to replace our nominated commissioner, Hon. Lonnie Chijere Chirwa who was rejected by the MCP Members of Parliament.

“Simply put, we stood firmly behind our choice, confident in her exceptional qualifications and integrity. The rejection of her nomination seems politically motivated, rather than based on merit,” wrote Chaponda.

He added: “We will not be swayed by suggestions from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The DPP remains committed to fairness and respect. If necessary, we will propose an alternative nominee. Until then, the government must take full responsibility for any actions against our trusted nominee.

“Thank you for your support and understanding.”
