A 45-year-old traffic police officer from Namwera Police Post in Mangochi has died following a motorcycle collision along the Bakili Muluzi Highway in Mangochi district.
Mangochi Police Station spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi has since identified the officer as Sub Inspector Cliff Kokha from Chonde village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo.
The officer was involved in the accident when his Yamaha DT motorcycle registration number BR 4783 collided with another which was operated by 51-year-old Meja Majidu from Mkambiri village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
Daudi said Majidu was riding an unregistered Lifo motorcycle from Chiponde towards Namwera.
Upon reaching Sumaili village, he swerved onto the dirt verge of the road to avoid the rumble surface.
He suddenly re-entered the main road without signalling, colliding with Sub Inspector Kokha, who was traveliing in the same direction behind him.
Daudi said the impact left Sub Inspector Kokha with severe head injuries and a fractured nose, while Majidu sustained head injuries and multiple fractures on his right arm.
Both men were rushed to Namwera Health Centre and later transferred to Mangochi District Hospital.
Kokha was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Majidu continues to receive treatment at the same facility.
