Former Director of Operations for the North Joe Nyirongo has resigned from the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and from front-line politics.

Nyirongo has since handed over the resignation letter to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda.

In the letter Nyirongo has cited his ill-health as the main reason for his resignation.

“I trust this letter finds you well. After deep reflection, soul-searching, and extensive discussions with my family, relatives, and close friends, I have made the difficult decision to step back from active politics. Therefore, I am officially tendering my resignation as a member of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), effective immediately.

“As you may know, my previous roles within the party, particularly before the convention, were primarily in the Operations Department. My focus has been on areas such as Strategic Planning and Coordination, Campaign Management, Event and Rally Organization, Crisis Management, and Relationship Building. Even though I did not secure a formal position during the convention, my dedication to the MCP has remained unwavering. I would have continued to contribute voluntarily because of my passion for these roles,” said Nyriongo in the letter.

He added: “However, due to ongoing health challenges, including chronic illness and stress-related conditions, I believe it is now essential to prioritize my well-being. The nature of operations, especially during high-pressure periods such as campaign seasons or during crises, inevitably involves significant stress. This environment poses a risk to my health, and I have concluded that stepping down is in the best interest of both myself and my family.

“I remain deeply appreciative of the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, and I am grateful to the entire MCP membership for the support and camaraderie I have enjoyed throughout my time with the party.

“As the MCP moves forward toward the general election next year, I wish the party, Dr. Chakwera, and all its leaders every success. I have no doubt that the MCP will continue to serve Malawi and its people with distinction.”

MCP is yet to comment on the matter.
