A one-year-old baby has been diagnosed with cholera at Machinga District Hospital, health authorities have confirmed.

The case has been reported just a day after Chitipa District registered 15 cholera cases and one death.

Speaking to the press Machinga District Hospital spokesperson Wongani Nyirenda said the baby was admitted to the facility yesterday and is currently receiving treatment.

“The baby is in stable condition. However, we have increased our public awareness efforts in the Nsanama Health Centre catchment area, where the child comes from. Additionally, we are conducting Case Area Targeted Interventions in surrounding villages,” he explained.

During the 2022-2023 cholera outbreak, Machinga District was among the hardest hit, recording over 700 cases and more than 30 deaths.
