Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has relieved Army Commander Lieutenant General Dennis Sitali Alibuzwi of his duties.
The announcement was made yesterday, signaling a significant leadership change within the country’s defense forces.
Details surrounding the reasons for Alibuzwi’s dismissal have yet to be disclosed, but the decision comes amid ongoing efforts by President Hichilema to reform various sectors of government and national institutions since taking office.
Lt. Gen. Alibuzwi was appointed as Army Commander in August 2021, following Hichilema’s electoral victory.
His dismissal has sparked widespread discussion as the nation awaits further information on the replacement and the future direction of the Zambian military under new leadership.
The President has since promoted Major General Geoffrey Zyeele to the rank of Lieutenant General and subsequently appointed him Army Commander.
Until his promotion, Lt Gen Zyeele served as Deputy Army Commander.
