Police in Ngabu, Chikwawa, are searching for 20-year-old student Maria Akimu, who is believed to have abandoned her newborn baby in a toilet shortly after giving birth.
According to police spokesperson Chancy Mfune, the baby was found crying in the toilet by another person living nearby on the night of Tuesday.
Mfune stated that the baby is now in good condition following assistance received at Ngabu Hospital after being rescued from the toilet.
Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help locate the young woman, who is currently on the run.
Maria Akimu is from the village of Mwadula in the Ngabu area of Chikwawa District.
