Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the vandalism of vehicles during a rally held by Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera.

The incident occurred on 12 September 2024, in Chikwawa District when the president was touring to Lower Shire.

National police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed that the suspects face charges of assault and property damage.

During the vandalism day, Seven vehicles were reportedly damaged during the chaos, and several individuals sustained injuries.

The suspects are currently at Chikwawa police custody and are expected to appear in court on September 7, 2024, to answer the charges.

Authorities are investigating the incident further, and the public has been urged to maintain peace during political events.
