Leader of the House, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has assured that there will be no violence ahead of political rallies by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) at Ekwendeni and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at Katoto ground in Mzuzu, which are 20 kilometres apart.

Chimwendo Banda stated that the time for violence is over, and parties should learn to exist peacefully in a democratic country. He made these remarks today in Parliament during his closing remarks following a request from the leader of the opposition, George Chaponda, regarding the tense rallies scheduled for this weekend in the North.

Chimwendo Banda noted that 20kms apart is a significant distance and assured the DPP that no violence would be tolerated.

A seemingly charged Chimwendo Banda also accused the DPP of stealing government from the United Democratic Front and of arresting the former president Bakili Muluzi for 17 years, as well as his son Atupele.

He also mocked the DPP for failing to elect a woman as vice president, pointing out that it has six male vice presidents.
