Malawian afro-pop star Dan Lufani, popularly known as Dan Lu, has lost more than 20,000 Facebook followers in a space of four days following the release of his new song featuring President Lazarus Chakwera.

Dan Lu, who had previously been associated with songs supporting the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), released a new track titled Chakwera, praising some of the accomplishments of President Chakwera of MCP during his tenure.

This sudden shift in allegiance sparked outrage among his followers, particularly on his Facebook page, leading to a mass unfollowing campaign dubbed “Unfollow Dan Lu.”

In response to the backlash, Dan Lu went live on Facebook, where he danced to the controversial song, further infuriating his followers. He also shared a video of himself and his family playing cards while enjoying the same song, fueling the ongoing debate and dissatisfaction among his fanbase.

The incident has sparked widespread conversation about the intersection of music and politics in Malawi, with many fans feeling alienated by the artist’s political pivot.
