The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has called on the Lilongwe City Council to put on hold its decision to impose fees on photography businesses operating within the city.
According to a letter signed by CDEDI Executive Director, Mr. Sylvester Namiwa, the proposal requires thorough review and consideration. Mr. Namiwa stated that while CDEDI understands the need for the council to generate revenue to improve services for residents, such measures should not place undue burden on certain groups.
He further requested that before the council implements the proposal, they should hold consultations with photography business operators to ensure that all parties are satisfied with the arrangement.
Namiwa warned that if this issue is not handled carefully, many photography business owners could be forced to shut down, which would worsen unemployment and poverty levels in the country.
Recently, the Lilongwe City Council announced that photography businesses in the city would be required to pay an annual fee of K105,000 to operate.
