The Photographers Association of Malawi has expressed concern over the Lilongwe City Council’s recent decision to impose an annual fee for photographers.

The association’s leader, Lucky Mkandawire, stated that the proposed fee of K105,000 per photographer is excessive, especially since many in the profession struggle to make this money.

The Lilongwe City Council emphasized that, according to regulations established in 2018, all businesses in the city are required to pay a registration fee, indicating that photographers are not the only ones affected.

Additionally, the council noted that photography studios will need to pay a higher fee of K190,000 annually.

Other businesses in the city, such as barbershops and salons, have also been reminded of their obligation to pay fees to the council.
