Police in Lilongwe have arrested Thokozani Charles, alleging that he stole two phones from a woman after deceiving her into thinking he was going to marry her and that she would become wealthy through magic.
Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Hastings Chigalu stated that the suspect, who sells clothing, met the woman on a Facebook page two weeks ago.
They then reportedly met at a guesthouse in Area 50, where they engaged in intimate activities. Later that evening, he told her to visit another location to perform rituals in order to gain wealth as a couple.
According to the police report, after arriving near the Bingu National Stadium, the suspect instructed the woman to perform rituals at a junction. It was at this point that he fled with two phones valued at around K300,000, which the police have since recovered.
The victim, who lives in Area 23, reported Charles to the police after they found him sleeping at his home in Mtandire.
Charles hails from Chitenje village in Zomba.
