The Ministry of Health has scheduled October 4 as the day it will hold a meeting with representatives of public health facilities support staff who are currently on strike, according to a letter dated October 1 addressed to the leader of the workers, Balawala Vingula.

According to the letter, the Office of the Ombudsman will be present during the meeting. The Ministry has advised the health workers to “call off the strike and return to work.”

In an interview, Vingula confirmed that he has received the letter but said the strike will continue tonight until tomorrow morning, when the health workers will return to work.

Earlier today, health workers across the country conducted strikes over salary arrears now totaling MK45 billion. According to Vingula, the arrears date back 18 years.

The situation underscores the need for a quick resolution to support health workers and restore public health services.
