The Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a 26-year-old-man Rabson Namagowa to pay a fine of K600,000 or serve a five-year imprisonment with hard labour for stabbing his wife on the abdomen.

Masambanjati police state prosecutor Sub-Inspector Henry Chitandale told the court that on May 21, 2024, the convict asked his wife to give him K7,000 to buy beer, but she refused as it was meant to buy food in the house.

Chitandale said this angered Namagowa who drew a knife and stabbed his wife in the abdomen and the intenstines protruded out.

In court, the convict prayed for leniency, considering that he is a first offender and acted under the influence of alcohol.

When passing sentence, First grade magistrate James Balakasi agreed with the state that cases of Gender Based Violence remain rampant in the country as such, the sentence should serve as a deterrent to would-be-offenders.
