Malawian football fans have condemned the act of Mafco FC players for turning the pitch into a battlefield during yesterday’s match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Mafco FC faced FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the TNM Super League, and the match ended 1-0 in favor of the Blantyre-based Big Bullets after Gasten Phodo scored in the 15th minute of the first half.
However, tensions escalated during the match as Mafco FC, a team comprised of military personnel, engaged in violent behavior, turning the field into a scene of conflict.
The incident began when Big Bullets player Wongani Lungu fell to the ground and was subsequently surrounded by several Mafco FC players, who deliberately stepped on him.
A video circulating on social media shows Lungu lying on the ground, with three Mafco players intentionally stepping on him, clearly visible to both the referee and audiences. Mafco FC players later argued that Lungu had faked his fall to waste time.
Referee Cassim Shaibu issued a yellow card to Mafco’s goalkeeper, Christopher Mikuwa, for pushing Chawanangwa Gumbo during the chaos.
Many football lovers have criticised Mafco FC for their unprofessional conduct, which undermined the spirit of fair play expected on the football field and they have asked Authorities to look into the matter.
