Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has today left Malawi for Morocco, where he will attend the African Consultation in preparation for the Third United Nations Oceans Conference in Tangier on October 9, 2024. This high-level conference is aimed at supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

During the previous Ocean Decade Conference, held in Barcelona, Spain from April 10 to 12, 2024, discussions centred on strengthening the sustainable management of the ocean and promoting science-based innovation to achieve global goals.

In addition to attending the consultation, Vice President Usi will also hold bilateral talks with Moroccan government officials to foster diplomatic relations between Malawi and Morocco. This follows the recent inauguration of Malawi’s new embassy in Rabat.

Following his stay in Morocco, Dr. Usi will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, to attend the Pre-Conference of Parties (Pre-Co) to the UN Climate Change Conference from October 10 to 12, 2024. The pre-conference will address key solutions to global climate issues ahead of COP29 in November.

Dr. Usi is expected to return to Malawi on October 14, 2024.
