An 80-year-old man, Elias Kupunda, allegedly assaulted to death his wife yesterday before hanging himself at Ndamani village, in the area of senior chief Khwethemule in Thyolo District.
The district’s station criminal investigation officer, Hussein Chakwana, said the disagreement ensued when the wife, Magret Muongola, 73 (now deceased), reportedly refused to make love with Kupunda.
Chakwana said this irked the husband who beat up Muongola, and she consequently died due to serious cuts.
He added that upon seeing this, the man is suspected to have committed suicide by hanging himself to a roof in the same house.
Postmortem results show that the woman died of loss of blood, while the man’s death is due to suffocation secondary to strangulation.
