Former President Peter Mutharika who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) torchbearer has urged University students across the country not to lose hope, saying he will rescue them once voted into power in the 2025 polls.
Mutharika said this after meeting leadership of DPP wing at the Malawi University of Businness and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) on Monday at his residence in Nyambadwe, Blantyre.
“The Leadership of DPP wing from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) paid me a courtesy call yesterday afternoon. It was my pleasure to host them. They pointed out some of the challenges they are facing, including most of the students failing to pay fees as well as their anxiety of the future due to the economic downturn in the country. I assured them that my incoming government will address such challenges.
“Indeed, in the process of fixing this country that we will be embarking on next year, we must transition to a knowledge driven economy. As such skilled and educated labour force will be key. As we initiated internship programs, creating new universities and introducing the Technical Colleges in our last term, we will do more for our young people when we return to power,” wrote Mutharika.
He added: “To the young people in all universities, do not lose hope. APM is coming back and will, once again, support you in attaining quality education and again create an economic environment that favours entrepreneurial activities and the thriving of big businesses so you get jobs.”
Mutharika is seeking re-election for the forth-time in the 2025 polls under DPP ticket.
