Assistant Registrar of the High Court and the Supreme Court Elijah Dazilikwiza Pachalo Daniels has rejected an application by the Democratic Progressive Party to issue summons for a case on the mandatory use of National IDs during voter registration for the forthcoming general election.

The party had filed an application against the Malawi Electoral Commission, arguing that mandatory use of the national IDs during the polls would infringe on the right to vote for those people who are having challenges in processing the IDs.

However, Assistant Registrar Daniels says DPP does not have the capacity to sue on such a matter, describing the action as ‘total abuse of court processes’.

Malawi will hold the polls in September next year to choose a president, legislators and ward councillors.
