One person has died, while 21 others are injured and receiving treatment at Chipini Health Center in Zomba after houses collapsed due to a windstorm that hit the area yesterday.

Sub Traditional Authority (TA) Nkapita confirmed the incident, stating that the disaster has affected 12 villages under the jurisdiction of Group Village Headman Mwangata. A report compiled so far indicates that 106 households have been impacted by the storm.

“We are still trying to contact local council officials to inform them of the situation,” Sub TA Nkapita explained.

Zacheous Roke, the Chairperson of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Nkapita area, reported that household items such as furniture and food supplies, including maize flour, were destroyed by the windstorm, which was accompanied by heavy rains.

As of now, officials from the Zomba District Council responsible for disaster management have not yet commented on the incident.
