The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced an increase in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from 3,245 Kwacha to 3,740 Kwacha, marking a rise of 15.25 percent. This change will take effect on October 16, 2024.
In a statement, MERA explained that the adjustment is a response to the negative effects of the Malawi Kwacha’s depreciation against major currencies, which has led to higher costs for imported gas and diminished returns for local operators. Chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje noted that this decision is necessary to support the sustainability of the industry.
This comes at a time when the country is encouraging citizens to utilize renewable energy sources like gas.
