A 49-year-old ex-convict, George Chawezi, has been killed by an angry mob after being caught stealing in Mtalimanja village, Mangochi Township.
Police records indicate that Chawezi was a habitual criminal with three previous convictions. He had recently been released from prison on July 8, 2024, after serving four years for motorcycle theft.
In the early hours of October 14, 2024, Chawezi allegedly broke into a businessman’s house while the owner was asleep. Awakened by strange noises, the owner saw Chawezi trying to enter through a window.
The owner shouted for help, prompting Chawezi to flee by climbing a brick fence, where he was met by a mob. He was assaulted with sticks and stones.
The incident was reported to the Mangochi Police Station, and officers found Chawezi unconscious in a pool of blood. A small bag containing burglary tools, including two screwdrivers, a wheel spanner, scissors, three spanners, and a face mask, was discovered at the scene.
Chawezi was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital but died a few hours later while receiving treatment.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible, who will face murder charges if found.
Chawezi was from Nkami village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.
