Police in Mzimba District have arrested a woman identified as Veta Mwale for allegedly attempting to murder her two-year-old child in Chimkusa area yesterday on 22 October 2024.
According to Mzimba Police spokesperson Maria Banda, the suspect had planned to end her child’s life due to financial difficulties.

Banda stated that Mwale was struggling to provide basic necessities such as food and proper shelter for her child, which drove her to consider taking drastic measures.
“It appears the mother felt overwhelmed by her inability to care for the child, and she decided to end the child’s life by hanging the toddler from the roof,” said Banda.

Concerned community members tipped off the police after suspecting Mwale’s intentions. The police intervened just in time to prevent the tragedy.

Veta Mwale who hails from Jailosi Mwale Village under Chief Mzikubola in the district, is currently in police custody awaiting further investigation.

Police have urged the public to seek help from community leaders or authorities when faced with challenges, rather than resorting to violence.
