Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja has come out of her cocoon to deny claims that she is Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member.

Mtalimanja said this during an exclusive interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) hosted by Frank Joab Chakhaza monitored by this publication.

In the interview Mtalimanja said she was hired on the post because of her capabilities not based on the claims by opposition political parties in the country.

“My appointment followed the laid out procedures. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) nominated me to the President. The President made the appointment. I didn’t apply for this Job. I am a judge of the High Court. I have just been assigned this role. Once my term is over, i will go back to the judiciary,” said Mtalimanja.

Three opposition political parties namely; Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the United Transformation Movement (UTM) held media briefing in Lilongwe where they demanded for the resignation of Mtalimanja and MEC Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Andrew Mpesi.

The three political parties accused the two of belonging to MCP.
