Second Grade Magistrate Court in Nkhata Bay has convicted and sentenced a 47 year-old man to 18 months in prison for theft of electrical wires valued at K96,900.

State prosecutor, Edson Mgona, identified the convict as Jonathan Manda who committed the offence on 27 August 2024.

According Mgona, Manda allegedly removed the installed wires from Maria Kamanga’s home, pretending he was sent by the homeowner to do so.

During his court appearance, Manda pleaded guilty to the charges and requested leniency, explaining he supports his family. However, Magistrate Alex Mailosi emphasized the serious breach of trust and the financial burden on the homeowner due to repair costs.

The magistrate stated that Manda’s actions warranted a strict penalty to deter similar incidents.

Jonathan Manda hails from Kasweswe Village under Chief Mkumbira in Nkhata Bay.
