Police in Likoma District have strongly condemned the recent wave of violence that erupted on the island in response to the tragic killing of six-year-old Lusako Gondwe.
According to Officer in Charge Spencer Jinja, two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, as authorities work to bring justice and maintain order.
The protests, which followed the brutal killing, saw enraged community members stone the police station, set a vehicle on fire, and injure several officers, a situation Jinja described as potentially detrimental to security and justice efforts on the island.
The demonstrations also caused extensive property damage, including the destruction of the side mirror of a Likoma District Council vehicle, the entrance door to St. Peter’s Hospital Mortuary, several windows at St. Peter’s Primary School, and damage to the Teacher Development Centre and school hall windows.
Police are urging the community to maintain peace and allow the legal process to proceed, promising continued efforts to ensure justice for Lusako Gondwe and enhanced security in Likoma.
