Supporters of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) have gathered at the entrance to the police headquarters in Area 30 in Lilongwe, where the party’s General Secretary, Patricia Kaliati, has been taken by the police for questioning regarding alleged crimes.
Kaliati was arrested yesterday and was held at Lingadzi Police Station. According to Malawi Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya, the police have compelling evidence that Kaliati, along with two accomplices who are still at large, intended to violate certain laws of Malawi.
Meanwhile, one of the party’s senior officials, Newton Kambala, has urged supporters to gather at the party’s headquarters in Area 12 to avoid confrontations with the police.
Supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) parties have also gathered at the scene.
