In a devastating road accident on the Chavuma Road in Zambia, seven people have lost their lives, including six players from the Chavuma Town Council Football Club and a council official.
Chavuma Council Secretary, Isaac Kang’ombe, confirmed the incident, adding that two other people, along with nine additional players and three officials, have been hospitalized at Chavuma Mission Hospital and Chavuma District Hospital. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
The team was traveling in a Toyota Hiace bus en route to Mufumbwe for a Division 1 Northwestern Province league match, as they are registered under the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ). Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, reported that the bus was driven by 30-year-old Brian Chilobe from Zambezi Township. Excessive speed reportedly led to the driver losing control, causing the bus to overturn three times.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this tragic time.
