The death toll in the Chikwawa petrol fire accident has shot to three. The deceased have been identified as Janet Gauti, aged 46; Falesi Tsalapado, aged 72; and Peterson Gracium, aged 19.

Chance Mfune, Chikwawa police deputy publicist, has told us, “One got seriously burnt and is battling for his life at Nsanje District Hospital.

She said their house caught fire on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Ndomera village under Traditional Authority Ngowe in the district.

“Janet Gauti, now deceased, was illegally selling petroleum products that were being kept in her mother’s house, Falesi Tsalapado, also deceased.

“A customer came to buy some fuel, and Gracium went to get a bottle of petrol, which burst as he was passing a charcoal stove,” explained Mfune, who has since warned people in the district against keeping fuel in their houses.
