Malawi Prison Services (MPS) has launched an investigation into reports that one of its employees duped over 15 people of a minimum of K200,000 at Bvumbwe Young Offenders Rehabilitation Center in Thyolo with promises of jobs in the service.
The accused, prison warder Damiano Yobe, has denied the allegations, stating that this news is new to him.
Some of the victims claim that Yobe solicited amounts up to K800,000, promising that their relatives would be recruited as prison warders at Mapanga Training College in the recent recruitment drive.
National prison spokesperson Steve Meke stated that his office has not yet received any official reports regarding the allegations. However, he disclosed that they have launched a comprehensive investigation to establish the truth of the matter.
Meanwhile, Meke urged all job seekers not to be fooled by fraudsters, as the department does not use third parties in its recruitment process.
