Information sourced by this publication indicates that government will spend MK2.7 billion to construct a mausoleum for late Gwanda Chakwamba who once served as Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President.

This has been revealed in tender released by the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture dated November 4, 2024 placed in one of the local daily papers seen by this publication.

In the tender, government intends to award PMC Limited a MK2,701,085.480.00 contract for the construction of a mausoleum for Chakwamba in Nsanje district in recognition for his political contributions to the country.

The tender has attracted mixed reactions with many describing the move as ploy by government to siphon money from public coffers.

Others have gone further to suggest that the money in the tender be channeled in the purchase of maize for people affected by hunger.

Effort to talk to Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu on the matter proved futile.
