Police at Lilongwe have arrested Maclester Phiri, 23, for stealing HP laptop and K200,000 cash at the Department of Education in Area 4, in the Capital City on 1 November 2024.

The suspect, posing as a student at Mchitanjiru Community Day Secondary School in the district, prepared fake documents and went to the office to ask for a school bussary.

Lilongwe Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Khumbo Sanyiwa said upon entering one of the offices at the department, and realizing that there was no person in the room, the suspect took advantage and stole the laptop and the cash that was in a bag.

Police investigations led to the arrest of the suspect at his house in Area 3 where he stays with his wife.

At the meantime, police have intensified efforts to recover the laptop.

Maclester Phiri (suspect) will appear in court soon to answer a case of theft.

He hails from Mailosi Village, Traditional Authority Ngabu in Chikwawa District.
